Nail Prep for Press-On Nails
Nail Prep for Press-On Nails
The three minutes before you apply determine how long the nails stay on.
Prep is not glamorous. There is no visible result until two weeks later when your nails are still on and someone else's have already fallen off. But it is the most important part of the whole process.
Adhesive, whether glue or sticky tabs, bonds to what is directly underneath it. If that surface has oils, moisture, or loose cuticle skin, the bond starts weaker than it should. Every bit of wear time lost to early lifting comes back to prep.
Your YUMMICLAWS kit includes everything needed. This guide explains what each tool does and why.
The Four Prep Steps
Step 1: Push back your cuticles
Use the cuticle pusher from your kit to gently push your cuticles back on every finger. Start at the sides and work toward the centre. The goal is to expose as much of the nail plate as possible so the press-on sits directly on nail, not skin.
Why it matters: adhesive does not bond well to skin. Any press-on that sits over cuticle skin will start lifting from the base within the first day or two, regardless of how well everything else was done.
Step 2: Lightly buff the surface
Use your nail file to buff the top of each natural nail lightly. Short strokes, light pressure. You are not reshaping the nail. You are only removing the shine.
Why it matters: a natural nail has a naturally oily, smooth surface. That smoothness is what the adhesive has to grip. Buffing creates a slightly matte, textured surface that gives the glue or tab something to hold onto. This step roughly doubles the adhesive contact compared to an unbuffed nail.
This matters especially in Malaysia and Singapore. High ambient humidity means nails carry more surface moisture throughout the day. Buffing removes that moisture barrier along with the shine.
Step 3: Wipe with your alcohol pad
Open the alcohol pad from your kit and wipe every nail thoroughly. Do this immediately before applying glue or sticky tabs. The alcohol removes the last traces of surface oil, dust from buffing, and any moisture.
Why it matters: even a light film of oil left on the nail after buffing is enough to reduce the adhesive bond. The alcohol wipe is a clean reset. Let each nail air dry for 10 seconds before moving on. Do not touch the nail surface after wiping.
Step 4: Do not apply hand cream beforehand
This sounds obvious but is easy to forget. If you apply hand cream or cuticle oil in the hour before putting on your nails, some of that product will have transferred to the nail surface. Wipe nails with an alcohol pad regardless of whether you have applied anything, and avoid moisturisers on or around the nails until after application is done.
How Prep Affects Wear Time
Nails applied over a well-prepped surface hold for 1 to 3 weeks with glue and 1 to 3 days with sticky tabs. Nails applied without prep typically start lifting within 1 to 3 days regardless of which adhesive you use.
The prep steps above take about 3 minutes across all ten fingers. That 3 minutes is the single best investment you can make in wear time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buff my nails every time I apply press-ons?
Yes, every time. Natural nail oils return between wears. Even if you wore the same set yesterday, the prep steps should be repeated fresh before each application.
Can I skip the alcohol wipe if I have sensitive skin?
The alcohol pad in your kit is designed for use on nails, not skin. Apply it only to the nail surface and avoid the skin around the nail if you have sensitivity. There is no substitute step that works as well for removing surface oils from the nail plate.
I buffed my nails and now they look dull. Is that normal?
Yes, this is exactly what you want. A matte nail surface is the correct result. The shine returns once your press-on is applied on top.
Should I cut my natural nails before applying press-ons?
Shorter natural nails generally give a more comfortable result, especially with longer press-on lengths. If your natural nail is very long, it can create a gap between the press-on and the nail plate at the tip. Trim natural nails short before applying if you plan to wear a longer press-on style.
Does nail prep damage natural nails?
No. Light buffing and an alcohol wipe are both safe and do not thin or damage the nail plate. The buffing described here is a surface clean, not a heavy file. Do not press hard or buff repeatedly in the same spot.
