How to Remove Press-On Nails Without Damage

How to Remove Press-On Nails Without Damage

The right removal keeps your natural nails healthy and your press-ons ready to wear again.

The most common cause of damaged natural nails after wearing press-ons is not the nails themselves. It is the removal. Peeling or forcing a nail off pulls at the surface of your natural nail plate. Done repeatedly, this leads to thinning and sensitivity.

The soak method takes a few extra minutes, but it releases the adhesive cleanly without any force. Your natural nails stay intact, and the press-ons come off in good condition to be reused.

What You Will Need

  • A bowl large enough for both hands
  • Warm water
  • A few drops of oil (any oil works: olive, coconut, baby oil)
  • A small amount of soap
  • Cuticle pusher from your YUMMICLAWS kit
  • Nail file from your YUMMICLAWS kit

The Four Steps

Step 1: Prepare the soak

Fill your bowl with warm water. Add a few drops of oil and a small squeeze of soap. The oil softens the adhesive bond and the warmth helps the glue release. The water does not need to be hot, just comfortably warm. Stir briefly to mix.

Step 2: Soak for 10 to 15 minutes

Submerge both hands and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. You will feel the press-ons begin to loosen from the edges. Do not rush this step. If the nails are not releasing easily after 15 minutes, soak for another 5 minutes rather than forcing them off.

Step 3: Gently lift from the edges

Use the cuticle pusher from your kit to gently slide under the edge of each press-on nail, working from the sidewall toward the centre. Apply light lateral pressure rather than lifting straight up. The nail should slide off with minimal resistance. If it does not, it needs more soaking time. Do not force it.

Step 4: Clean up and store

Once all nails are removed, use the nail file to gently buff any glue residue from the back of each press-on. Work lightly over the inner surface until it feels smooth. Then wipe the natural nail surface gently, let your hands dry, and apply a small amount of cuticle oil if you have it. Store the press-ons in the original YUMMICLAWS box.

A Note on Reusability

YUMMICLAWS press-on nails are made to be reusable for life with proper care. Correct removal is the single biggest factor in how long your sets last. A set removed gently can be worn again and again. A set peeled off quickly may show stress marks or lifting at the edges on the next wear.

After removal, make sure the back of each press-on is clean and free from glue before storing. See our care and storage guide for the full between-wears routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to soak for?

10 to 15 minutes for glue-applied nails. If the nails feel loose before that, you can start testing the edges gently, but do not rush. Sticky tab nails may release in as little as 5 minutes.

What if a nail still feels stuck after soaking?

Soak for another 5 minutes. Never force it. The adhesive will release with enough soaking time. Using the cuticle tool to pry upward rather than slide sideways is the most common cause of nail plate damage during removal.

Can I use acetone to remove the glue?

We recommend the soak method over acetone. Acetone can dry out and weaken the press-on surface over time, which shortens the lifespan of the set. The soak method is gentler on both your natural nails and the press-ons.

My natural nails feel sensitive after removal. Is that normal?

Minor sensitivity is normal if you wore the nails for a longer period. Applying cuticle oil after removal helps. If you notice thinning or significant discomfort, you may have been removing nails with too much force. The soak method should eliminate this.

Do I need to remove all nails at once?

No. If only one nail has lifted or needs attention, you can remove and reapply just that nail without soaking the others.
