How to Apply Press-On Nails: A Beginner's Guide for Singapore and Malaysia

Press-on nails have come a long way from the plastic clip-ons of the early 2000s. Today's handmade press-on nails, like the ones YUMMICLAWS makes by hand in Malaysia, are soft acrylic sets that last 1 to 3 weeks with proper application and can be removed and reused many times over.

If you have never worn press-on nails before, this guide walks you through the entire process from prep to finish. Get the prep right and the rest is easy.

What you need before you start

Every YUMMICLAWS set ships with everything you need for your first application:

  • Alcohol pad (for nail prep)
  • Nail file
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Nail glue
  • Nail glue remover
  • Heart-shaped YUMMICLAWS nail file

If you are applying with sticky tabs instead of glue, you will need a set of double-sided nail adhesive tabs. Tabs are gentler on the natural nail and easier to remove, but they give a shorter wear time of around 3 to 5 days. For 1 to 3 weeks of wear, glue is the better choice.

Step 1: Size your nails first

Before you open the glue, sort your press-on nails by size. YUMMICLAWS sets come in XS, S, M, and L sizing across 10 nails. Hold each press-on nail over your natural nail. It should cover the nail from sidewall to sidewall without touching the skin on either side.

If you are unsure of your size, visit the YUMMICLAWS sizing chart before ordering. Getting the right size is the single most important factor in how long your press-ons stay on.

Step 2: Prep your natural nails

This step is what most beginners skip, and it is the reason most beginners have press-ons fall off early.

  1. Remove old polish completely. Any residue will break the bond.
  2. Push back your cuticles using the cuticle pusher included in your kit. Do not cut them. Just push them gently back toward the base of your nail.
  3. File the surface of your natural nail lightly with your nail file. You are creating a slightly rough texture for the glue to grip. Do not file too hard. A few light passes is enough.
  4. Clean with the alcohol pad. Wipe each nail to remove all oil, dust, and moisture. Do this last, right before you apply. Oily nails are the number one cause of press-ons lifting early.

Allow your nails to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Apply nail glue

Apply a small drop of nail glue to your natural nail, not to the press-on. Spread it thinly across the nail surface using the tip of the glue applicator. Less is more here. Excess glue around the edges makes removal harder and can weaken the bond.

You can also apply a very thin layer to the inside of the press-on nail for extra hold, but for most people a single application to the natural nail is sufficient.

Step 4: Press and hold

Align the press-on nail just above your cuticle, making sure it sits straight before touching down. Once the press-on contacts the glue, press firmly downward for 30 to 60 seconds. This is where the bond sets.

Work from the base of your thumb across to your pinky on one hand, then repeat on the other. Starting with your non-dominant hand makes the process easier.

Step 5: Check the edges

Once all 10 nails are applied, run your fingertip along the edges of each nail. If any edge is lifting slightly, apply a tiny amount of glue under the lifted section and press again for 30 seconds.

Avoid getting your hands wet for at least one hour after application to let the bond fully cure.

How long do YUMMICLAWS press-on nails last?

With proper prep and nail glue, YUMMICLAWS press-on nails typically last 1 to 3 weeks. The biggest variables are:

  • Nail prep (the biggest factor; skipping the alcohol wipe shortens wear significantly)
  • Your lifestyle (exposure to water, cleaning products, and heat will shorten wear)
  • Nail size fit (a press-on that is too narrow or too wide will lift at the edges faster)

Removing press-on nails safely

Never peel press-on nails off. Peeling pulls layers from your natural nail and will cause damage over time. YUMMICLAWS sets come with nail glue remover, and we have a full removal guide with step-by-step instructions.

Done correctly, removal takes around 10 to 15 minutes and leaves your natural nails completely undamaged.

Tips for your first application

  • Do your nails in the evening so the bond can cure overnight before you use your hands heavily.
  • Avoid applying right after a shower. Your nails absorb moisture and expand slightly, which weakens the bond as they dry back down.
  • If a nail pops off, clean both surfaces with the alcohol pad and reapply with a fresh dot of glue.
  • Keep your YUMMICLAWS kit in the box after use. The heart-shaped nail file and glue remover are what you need for touch-ups and removal.
